MassCom: My 10 favorite films, TV shows and books

Dr. Who (TV Series)

the series allows an escapist view of the world, letting you free your mind from your boring existence as a college student, and allowing you to travel through space and time with a witty tour guide. i love the imagination used to create the monsters in this show

By far my favorite enemies the Doctor has faced throughout the series have been the Daleks and the Cybermen, showing that looks can always deceive. one looks like a Japanese toy, whereas the other looks like a glorified trash can, yet they're the most feared in the universe.

Dead Silence (Motion Picture)

Dead Silence may be one of my favorite films specifically because I always feared that every puppet or doll that surrounded me was alive and secretly watching me, almost like a murderous Toy Story. This movie isn't so much a murderous Toy Story though, as all the puppets are the toys of a ventriloquist by the name of Mary Shaw. Cast out by the town she lived in after a child heckler at her show went missing, Mary Shaw haunts the old town and makes it known her death was just a brief intermission.

Besides the plot, a memorable part of the movie is the nursery rhyme themed song you occasionally hear throughout the movie.

"Beware the stare of Mary Shaw
She had no children, only dolls
And if you see her in your dreams

Be sure you never, ever scream "

Skins (TV Series)

Another one of my favorite shows has to be Skins. It's a British Comedy/Drama surrounding teens who deal with various life problems, usually revolving around love. Now I'm not one too big for shows revolving around love, but at first glance you'd think Skins is a show depicting the wild, crazy, party life of UK teenagers. Although I don't recommend sitting down and watching one episode after the other, after awhile that was all I wanted to do.

Spongebob Squarepants (TV Series)

Spongebob Squarepants is something I haven't grown out of and don't plan to anytime soon. In fact, as I've gotten older and I've begun to understand the underlying meaning of certain episodes, I like it even more. You would think his high pitched voice and ear piercing laugh would get irritating, but I'm from Manhattan, I hear more annoying things standing in line at Starbucks.

Arrested Development (TV Series)

Arrested Development is one of my favorite series, the humor is witty and the plot of the show is completely ridiculous. Micheal Bluth, (played by Jason Bateman) the main character, makes sure the family home construction business, and the family itself, doesn't fall apart. The family is dysfunctional and operates on the basis of pure insanity.

The Walking Dead (TV Series)

The Walking Dead on AMC is nothing short of a soon to be classic, in my opinion. I find the genre of zombies and undead hordes almost as played out as vampires have become since the Twilight Saga blew up, but this is one show that has held my interest in the undead. The show revolves around a group of survivors in a world of undead, lead by ex-Sheriff Rick Grimes, (played by Andrew Lincoln). Rick Grimes enters into the apocalypse that has overrun the earth in a hospital bed, recovering from his recent gunshot wound. Not so recent, as you'll see if you watch it, as he's been in a coma longer than he can remember. The show has better hair and makeup than your usual cheesy zombie flick, and the story that escalates between all the survivors, including their personal tales, make the show that much better.

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (Novel)

Crime and Punishment is a novel centered on a former student named Radion Raskolnikov. The book details his many struggles and physical and mental hardships he goes through after he commits a very serious crime. It's safe to say this is my favorite book, because it details mental torment that I don't believe I could ever feel, nor would I want to. And I am thoroughly impressed by the writing of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, who is my favorite author. Highlight worthy!

Insidious (Motion Picture)

Insidious was one of those possession movies that has become all the rage with today's movie scene. But I feel that this movie has bragging rights, due to its unusual nature of the out-of-body experience that they flaunted in this plot.

Invader Zim (TV Series)

Invader Zim has been my favorite series since I was a child. It's still pretty high up there, but I don't feel like moving it all the way back up to the top of this post because it's too much work. I've loved all the humor, the design, the animation, all of it. If I could choose my childhood from a series of fictional TV shows, this would be number one. Although drinking a can of diet Poop wouldn't be number one on my list of drinks.

Jersey Shore (TV Series)
Although I shouldn't be as forward to name this as one of my top watched shows, I have to. I believe that everyone needs a show to clear their mind. And that's what this show does to me. I completely shut off my brain and stare for hours. It's almost like a zoo exhibit, the show that is. I, on the other hand, look as if i was just struck by lightening and have trouble paying attention to anything else. I honestly can't even put a picture up because my viewership is one of my dirty secrets.
